Iconic Fashion Photographer for the New York Times Dies

Legendary New York Times street-fashion photographer Bill Cunningham passed away yesterday. He was 87. Known for his keen fashion sense and ascetic lifestyle, he began taking assignments for the New York Times in the 1970's.

Dressed in his trademark blue jacket, khaki pants and black sneakers, he rode his bike through virtually every corner of New York, looking for fashionable people to capture with his camera. His photo essays were must see's for anyone interested in the art of fashion and street photography.

Fojo: The latest mashup of digital and analogue

If you were ever wondering how you could make analogue prints from images on your smart phone (and you were, weren't you?), then wonder no more. The Enfojer is here!

The Enfojer, along with the accompanying app, Fojer, allows you to make old-school B&W prints right from the screen on your phone.

The phone app allows you to manipulate your image and then with the light from the screen, project the image onto the photographic paper. The paper is then processed just as any traditional B&W image would be. You can even make prints from negatives up to 6x6. Totally cool...

Call for Work: Greenhill Center for NC Art

The Greenhill Center for NC Art is excited to announce 7Squared, an inclusive community exhibition inviting NC artists of all ages and stages to submit an original piece of artwork, but there is a stipulation: it must be 7”x7” square! There is no fee to submit and the work must be lightweight enough to be hung by a magnet. The work will be on display for one week only, July 7 – 13. An Evening with Sally Mann at Meredith College

Photographer Sally Mann made a brief stop in the Triangle Friday, May 20th delivering a lecture at Meredith College. In a presentation in which Mann was equal parts raconteur and motivational speaker, no one should have left disappointed.

Reading passages from her latest book, Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs, Mann held her audience spellbound throughout. While sharing tales of her childhood, images from her youth projected on a large screen behind her.

Taking questions from the audience, one overarching theme that came through, and a point she repeated several times was: "...make the best... work you can make."  "Keep making work..." "Don't stop making work..." "...if you do they can't ignore you. You will be found".

Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs is a fascinating look at a fascinating artist, and just one more illustration that like many great artists, the life they lead is, in many ways, their greatest work of art.

Call for Work: The Carrack Community Show

The Carrack is one of the most unique art spaces in the Triangle, or most anywhere else for that matter. Two or three times a year The Carrack hosts a one week community show where any artist can drop off work. There is no entry gee or jurying process. Just bring your work, and if it meets the requirements (and not very stringent ones!) it will hang. Does it get much more better than that? I don't think so.

The next community show will be in June 2016. To participate, artists must deliver their work on Sunday, June 12, between 12pm and 5pm. The exhibit will open with a reception on June 17, during Third Friday in Durham and remain on view through June 25th. Pick up will be Sunday June 26th between 12pm and 5pm.
