Honoring Gordon Parks

On this day in 1912, photographer Gordon Parks was born in Fort Scott, KS. To say he was a Renaissance Man would be an understatement. In addition to being a photographer, he was also a musician, composer, writer, painter, and film director. He is best known for his documentary work, created during his time working for the Farm Security Administration, and for Life magazine.

Attending a segregated schools, he had little chance of attending college. A teacher telling him that to go would be a waste of time. Leaving home at the age of 15, he was entirely on his own. Working odd jobs, including managing a brothel, it was while working as a waiter in a railroad dinning car he discovered the portfolios of photographers in picture magazines and decided to become a photographer.

“At first I wasn't sure that I had the talent, but I did know I had a fear of failure, and that fear compelled me to fight off anything that might abet it.”

Rain Fails to Dampen Spirits Through 2nd Weekend of Click! Photography Festival

Hurricane Matthew brought over 5 inches of rain to some areas of the Triangle, but it didn't stop throngs of photography enthusiasts from attending exhibit openings and other events during the second weekend of the Click! Festival.

The weekend started on Thursday evening with a keynote presentation by Zanele Muholi to a sold-out auditorium at the NCMA. With a series of slides and a short film, Zanele discussed her work as a "Visual Activist". On display at the NCMA are 10 images from her series "Faces and Phases". The exhibit runs now through January 8, 2017.

First Friday in Raleigh was damp but there were enthusiastic crowds everywhere. Photo exhibits opening included images by Titus Brooks Higgins from his series Rorschach at Artspace, a group show titled A sense of... at the Roundabout Art Collective, and Drawn to Water, an exhibit of Bryce Lankard's work at Flanders Gallery.

Sunday brought relief from the rain with a lot of sunshine and also the opening of Stephen Fletcher's exhibit Some Semblance at Framers Corner in Carrboro. And later that afternoon, Bryce Lankard spoke to a standing room only crowd at Flanders Gallery discussing the images from his most recent series, Drawn to Water.

The weekend was wrapped-up with a special screening of Bending Space, at The Carolina Theatre, a documentary of the Georges Rousse project which took place in Durham 10 years ago.

To be sure you don't miss any more events, go to the Click! website and sign up for the newsletter which has all the up-to-the-minute happenings during the Festival.

Fojo: The latest mashup of digital and analogue

If you were ever wondering how you could make analogue prints from images on your smart phone (and you were, weren't you?), then wonder no more. The Enfojer is here!

The Enfojer, along with the accompanying app, Fojer, allows you to make old-school B&W prints right from the screen on your phone.

The Enfojer kit. Includes everything you need to make analogue B&W prints.
Everything you need to experience the joy of darkroom printing is included in the "Luxury Kit". The enlarger, safe light, trays, tongs, chemistry and paper.

The safe light. Probably the coolest one we've ever seen.
And we've seen a lot!

The phone app allows you to manipulate your image and then with the light from the screen, project the image onto the photographic paper. The paper is then processed just as any traditional B&W image would be. You can even make prints from negatives up to 6x6. Totally cool...

The Enfojer is made in Croatia with world-wide shipping currently included in the price. The project was funded through an Indiegogo campaign and the first units are now shipping. To find out more about the Enfojer, visit their website here.

An Evening with Sally Mann at Meredith College

Photographer Sally Mann made a brief stop in the Triangle Friday, May 20th delivering a lecture at Meredith College. In a presentation in which Mann was equal parts raconteur and motivational speaker, no one should have left disappointed.

Reading passages from her latest book, Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs, Mann held her audience spellbound throughout. While sharing tales of her childhood, images from her youth projected on a large screen behind her.

Sally Mann taking questions from the audience
Taking questions from the audience, one overarching theme that came through, and a point she repeated several times was: "...make the best... work you can make."  "Keep making work..." "Don't stop making work..." "...if you do they can't ignore you. You will be found".

Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs is a fascinating look at a fascinating artist, and just one more illustration that like many great artists, the life they lead is, in many ways, their greatest work of art.

Call for Work: The Carrack Community Show

The Carrack is one of the most unique art spaces in the Triangle, or most anywhere else for that matter. Two or three times a year The Carrack hosts a one week community show where any artist can drop off work. There is no entry gee or jurying process. Just bring your work, and if it meets the requirements (and not very stringent ones!) it will hang. Does it get much more better than that? I don't think so.

This image was exhibited in a gallery earlier this year. It could be exhibited again
at the Carrack this June if I dropped it off.
(c) Ray Pfeiffer

The next community show will be in June 2016. To participate, artists must deliver their work on Sunday, June 12, between 12pm and 5pm. The exhibit will open with a reception on June 17, during Third Friday in Durham and remain on view through June 25th. Pick up will be Sunday June 26th between 12pm and 5pm.

For more information on The Carrack and to participate in the community show, go to The Carrack website here.

Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to see and be seen. And for the one-of-a-kind experience that is The Carrack!

The Impossible Project Announces a New Instant Camera

Analogue and instant, the best combination since peanut butter and chocolate, has something new to celebrate: The Impossible Project’s I-1 instant camera.  Designed to use the Impossible 600-type instant film, the camera itself is a riff on the long lamented Polaroid 600 series camera and film. As simple to use as the original Polaroid 600, the camera has features that could have only been dreamed of when the original debuted some 30 years ago.

The future of instant photography

As befitting a camera for the 21st century, there are few controls on the camera itself, but with an iOS app via Bluetooth, you are able to control shutter speed, aperture, control flash, and select from one of several presets.
Scheduled to be released May 10th the I-1 will retail for $299. A small price to pay for real instant gratification.

For more information check out the Impossible Project website here.

Celebrate the 4th Annual Film Photography Day!

Today is Film Photography Day!

Celebrate by rummaging out your old analogue gear, drop in a roll of film and have some fun. No need to click along like the rest of the crowd. Shooting film is what all the cool kids do.

(c) Ray Pfeiffer
This image was made with film. And with a plastic camera besides!

And even if mom & dad always warned you about running with a different crowd, they would surely approve of this. After all, mom or dad probably had a film camera themselves. So pay homage to parents all the world over and shoot some film today. (Actually, you can shoot film any day you would like. Doing it today just makes it extra special!)

You'll feel better if you do.

Trust us. We wouldn't kid about something like this. We have film cameras ourselves...

Nik Software is now FREE!!!

Who says there is no such thing as a free software lunch? Well, probably no one. But Google has just announced that the Nik Software Collection is now available for download, totally free!

Fear not if you have just recently purchased the collection, your money will be refunded. To find out more and to download the software, go here.

We'll dismiss the critics who say that Google has no intention of supporting the package, will put their efforts elsewhere, and so why not give it away when no one will want it anyway.

Really?

Whatever the case, we'll not act uncharitably. Who are we to question the motives of a giant corporate entity? We'll just take the download and run...

Check this out: Upcoming Exhibition: Altered Narratives

If you are planning on being in the Charleston, SC area anytime between March 19th and April 1st be sure to stop in at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park and check out the exhibit: Altered Narratives: 19th Century Techniques Merge with 21st Century Visions. The exhibit features the "alternative process" work of 12 photographers including Raleigh's own Diana Bloomfield. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, March 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Often thought relegated to the scrapheap of photographic history, many of the original photographic processes are alive and well as this exhibit no doubt will show. In an era of zeros and ones where so much work never makes it off the back-lit screen, there is something eminently satisfying about holding and viewing a well crafted hand-made print in any one of the original processes. Platinum, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, to name but a few, possess a quality unrivaled by any other methods. If you don't believe me, go see this exhibit.
